How to Make Your Garage Door Quieter

Do you hear a lot of noise when you use your garage door? A certain amount of noise is to be expected, but it shouldn’t be overly loud. However, if your door is really noisy, there are a few things you can do to quiet it. The team here at Quick Name put together a few tips for you to follow to quiet your equipment.
1. Check The Nuts and Bolts
The vibration of the door can cause the nuts and bolts to loosen up and rattle when it is in operation. The best thing to do is go around and tighten everything up. Each hinge has 2-4 screws that you’ll need to tighten. Close the door, start at the bottom on the right side and go up. Then move to the center, then the left side and do the same thing.
2. Lubricate the Rollers and Drums
Squeaky sounds can be an indication that your rollers and drums need to be lubricated. This is a part of general maintenance that should be done each year. You’ll want to get a non-tacky type of grease that doesn’t attract dirt and debris.

If you are looking for a good lubricant, you should try Prime Flo. It’s available online. Also, you can go to your favorite hardware store and see what brands they carry. Or, you can call our team to come out and do this for you.
3. Replace the Rollers That Are Worn
If any of the rollers on your door are worn out, then they need to be replaced. As the nylon glides along the tracks, they can start to shred. When that happens, it will make the tracks shake more and cause unnecessary noise. It also puts a strain on your opener, and can cause it to wear out faster.

Inspect all of the rollers on your door for any that are worn out. Take a count of the number that need to be replaced and order the replacements online.
4. Install a Quieter Opener
Some openers are meant to have quieter operations and others are not. If you don’t have a belt drive opener, then you should consider getting one. Chain drives and screw drives are much louder and better used for detached garages.

Not sure which type of opener you have installed? Have one of our technicians come out and look at it for you. Or, you can find your owners’ manual to see if there are specifics about the product.
