Steps to Paint Your Garage Door

Depending on the type of door you have, painting it can be a great way to update the look of your home. The team here at Starlite Garage Doors put together a short guide that will help you get started on your project.

Why Paint Your Garage Door

Painting is one upkeep activity you can do yourself. Painting your garage door improves the appearance. It also protections against the elements.

Once the door starts to fade, it is time to repaint. Follow the proper steps to paint the door correctly. There are five important steps to follow and specific instructions for each step.

Step 1: Get all Necessary Materials

The first thing you should do is get all the materials needed. You will need paint, something to stir the paint and a paintbrush. Also, consider getting a primer to apply before the paint for a better final project.

You also need materials to clean and protect where you do not want paint, such as rags, painter’s tape, and drop cloths. You will also need a ladder or stool to reach the higher parts of the door. Make sure you have everything before starting.

Step 2: Consider the Weather

Before beginning any garage door painting project, check the weather forecast for rain. Also, note when the garage door receives the most direct sunlight. These are both important considerations.

You want to select the best time of day. This is when the door is NOT receiving direct sunlight.  You also want to ensure the paint has time to dry. If rain is expected over the next few days, you should postpone your project.

Paint will need a few days to dry before being exposed to rain. You should also not start painting too soon after it has rained, as the door needs to be completely dry before painting. The same rules apply to the primer if using it.

Step 3: Clean the Door

To get the best results from the paint job, first clean the door. There are many commercial products for cleaning your doors. These products are good to have if you can get them.

If you don’t get a commercial cleaning product, we recommend you use warm, soapy water and a sponge. Thoroughly clean everything. Pay special attention to the bottom. This is where most garage doors are the dirtiest.

Make sure it has time to dry completely before you paint anything. The garage door needs to be completely dry before any paint or primer is applied.

Step 4: Tape Off The Door

Since the door is the only thing you want painted, there are a couple precautions to take. The most time consuming will be taping. Using the painter’s tape, you want to place the tape on the edges of where you do not want paint.

After taping everywhere off, lay one of the drop cloths on your driveway and the garage floor. This will protect the surfaces from the paint. Cleaning up will also be quicker and simpler.

Step Five: Prime and Then Paint

If using primer, follow the painting guide first with the primer and then with the paint. (Let the primer dry before painting.) Otherwise, begin the steps using the paint.

Most garage door painting uses a roller and then a brush for any missed spots. Be careful and consistent with the roller to minimize any touch-ups needed with the paint brush. This will result in a better looking final project.
