Is Your Garage Door Hurricane Ready_

That time of the year is back – yep, it’s hurricane season again. If you are new to our area you may not be familiar with hurricane preparedness. The team at Starlite Garage Doors has a few suggestions to help you get your garage door ready for the next storm coming through your area.

Remember how your mother used to say ‘Prepare for the worst, pray for the best’? Being prepared for a hurricane can make a big difference, so let’s take a look at what you can do to be ready for it.
Why is Wind Resistance Capacity Important?
Think about your garage being like a small cardboard box. If the box is totally enclosed it takes a pretty good gust of air to move it about. If you open one side of the box and hit it with the same gust of air the box will easily blow all over the place.

The same principle applies to your garage. Once your garage door fails the wind can get inside and damage your homes walls and roof from the inside out. Maintaining your garage doors integrity can make a major difference in the amount of damage your home experiences.
What is the Wind Capacity of Your Garage Door?
The easiest way to check the wind capacity of your garage door is to check your owner’s manual. However, if you do not have the manual or you can’t find it, get the model and serial number off the door itself. With that information you can check on your doors wind resistance capability. If your door is not wind resistant consider getting a garage door that is.
Does Your Garage Door Need a Wind Resistant Brace?
If your door is not wind resistant a removable wind load post can be put in manually. It will brace the door, giving it more support and help to prevent it from blowing inward. Before installing the brace you will need to disconnect the arm from your door (pull the red rope that hangs from your door opener). Also, be sure to set the locks on your door to support the sides.
Unplug Your Garage Door Opener
Unplugging your garage door opener will ensure the door won’t accidentally open, and also will prevent a power surge from burning out your electric motor when the power is returned.
Cover Your Garage Door Windows
To secure your garage from wind and rain damage, cover the windows with plywood in much the same manner your homes windows will be covered.
Secure Items Stored in Your Garage
Make sure all small items are stored in plastic bins. Put the largest items closest to the walls first to help protect the inner walls should the garage door fail.
Get a Wind Resistant Door
Call the team at Starlite Garage Doors to have a wind resistant door installed. A wind resistant door will be made of much stronger material to withstand higher wind speeds. It will be a one time change, and you’ll be prepared for any storms for several years. Once your stronger door is in, it will give you more time to focus on getting the rest of your home ready for the storm.

Check with your insurance company as they may cover costs associated with the new door, or lower your insurance rates with the installation of the stronger door. Our friendly team is waiting for your call, so call us!
