How to Reduce The Noise From Your Garage Door Opener

One of the most common problems with garage doors is the fact when they open they make so much noise. Imagine you went on a drive to put your newborn baby to sleep. You come back home with a sense of accomplishment until the garage door closes and wakes up your newborn. Starlite Garage Doors has some tips on how to reduce the noise from your garage door.
What’s The Cause Of Noisy Garage Doors?
First, you need to know exactly what makes garage doors so noisy. Over time things change with your garage door. Weathering and overuse can cause your rollers to be worn out, making hardware lose, causing the massive vibration that makes your doors so noisy. Then you need to look at a few steps to remedy your problem by yourself by maintaining your garage door track.
How to Reduce The Noise From Your Opener
1. Tighten The Nuts and Bolts
Since the noise is caused by loose parts, your first step should be to tighten all the nuts on the door and garage track. Use a deep socket wrench and a ratchet to do the job. Be careful not to overtighten.
2. Check For Worn Our Parts
Check for worn out rollers, hinges, and unsealed bearings. If they are worn its time to replace them. Replace track rollers one at a time. If your door uses a torsion spring do not attempt this as the pressure from loosening the bolts will release and it can cause a lot of damage to yourself and your door. Leave that one to the guys at Quick Names.

Worn hinges are less common than worn rollers, but sloppy hinges make a lot of noise and can cause the door to bind and wear out the tongue and groove joints at the door sections. If you see a strange hole where the tubular hinge pin connects with the hinge bracket, replace the hinge.
3. Inspect The Garage Door Chain
Once you’ve replaced the worn door parts, check the garage door opener chain. A loose chain makes loud slapping sounds that cause jerky door movements that smack the rollers against the track. So start by tightening the chain. If you have a track drive opener, then simply lubricate it with some WD40.

The next step is to lubricate everything. Spray all the hinges, roller bearings, and springs. Lubricate all the parts that move to reduce the most noise. You can buy most lubricants from any hardware store.
4. Install Anti-Vibration Pads
Use a ratchet to unscrew the opener bracket bolt and detach it from the ceiling. Either cut out rubber pads out of an old tire or just buy the specially made rubber/ cork anti-vibration pads. Slide one anti-vibration pad between the mounting bracket and the ceiling, and a second pad under the bracket.

Then slip a fender washer onto the new lag screw. Then drive it into the rafter with a socket wrench or an impact driver. Make sure to bolt all four corners of the opener bracket to the rafters.
